MORELOS, MEXICO — Months after a former Canadian Olympian was arrested in Mexico after months on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list, another crime story out of Mexico is gaining attention. This time, sports journalist Fernando Vargas was carjacked at gunpoint while speaking live on a TV broadcast.

Vargas was appearing on the Mexican sports show Bla, bla, bla Deportivo on Activo Deportes. He was sitting inside his parked car at a gas station in Morelos when the armed robbery happened. Morelos is located just south of Mexico City.

Robbery Happened During Live Interview

Vargas was speaking with host Ed Martínez when a man suddenly opened the driver’s side door.

The broadcast picked up the sound of the robber chambering a round in his gun. The man then demanded Vargas’ keys, phone, wallet, and other belongings.

Martínez watched in shock as the robbery unfolded live on air. Vargas appeared surprised but stayed calm. He gathered his belongings and stepped out of the vehicle.

It is not clear if the robber knew Vargas was on a live broadcast at the time.

Vargas Escaped Without Injury

Before the video feed went dark, Vargas could be heard trying to calm the robber down.

He was not physically hurt, but Martínez later told viewers that Vargas was very scared after the attack. Martínez also asked anyone who recognized the robber from the video to report him to authorities.

Fox News reported that Vargas is also the communications director for Mexico’s National Professional Basketball League. The league later said Vargas was doing well and praised him for staying professional during the frightening incident.

Suspect Remains at Large

The robber reportedly took Vargas’ car, phone, wallet, and other personal items.

Awful Announcing reported that Vargas received help from National Guard personnel and filed a formal police complaint after the carjacking.

As of the latest reports, no arrests had been made.

The incident has spread widely online because viewers watched the robbery happen in real time. It also raised fresh concerns about violent crime in public places, even during moments that seem routine, like a live sports interview from a parked car.
