BELFAST, NORTHERN IRELAND — Months after a man was arrested in a Dallas motel beheading case after claiming the victim put a spell on him, another disturbing knife attack is drawing attention. This time, a man was arrested after a brutal street assault in Northern Ireland that left the victim with serious injuries.
The attack happened late Monday in the Antrim Road area of north Belfast. Police said the victim, a local man in his 40s, was seriously injured in what authorities described as an attempted murder.
Graphic Video Shows Street Attack
Video shared online appeared to show a man armed with a knife pinning the victim down in the middle of the street.
The victim could be seen struggling as people nearby shouted for the attacker to stop. Some bystanders rushed in and tried to pull the suspect away.
At least one person appeared to hit the attacker with a stick while others tried to free the victim.
Victim Seriously Injured
Police said the victim suffered significant injuries to his face, neck, and back.
He was taken for medical treatment after the attack.
Authorities have not publicly identified the victim.
Local residents described the scene as horrifying. One witness said it looked like something from a horror movie, while another said they had never seen anything like it.
Suspect Arrested
Police arrested a man in his 30s on suspicion of attempted murder.
Northern Ireland police first said the suspect was believed to be Somalian, but later clarified that he was Sudanese. Officials said the early mistake happened during the fast-moving investigation.
Police have not released a motive.
They have also not said whether the attack is being investigated as terrorism.
Witnesses Left Shaken
The attack left people in the area frightened and upset.
One woman told local media she heard screaming outside before seeing children gathered in the street. A local council member said at least one woman was hospitalized because of the stress of witnessing the attack.
The violence also drew national attention in the United Kingdom.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the attack and said there was no tolerance for scenes of violence like this on the streets.
Investigation Ongoing
Police remained at the scene after the attack as forensic teams and investigators worked in the area.
Authorities are still reviewing evidence, including video of the incident and witness statements.
For now, the suspect remains under investigation as police work to determine what led to the violent assault.
