CHICAGO — Following the separate, recent indictment of an Illinois couple for child abuse, a fatal police shooting took place on Chicago's Northwest Side on March 9. The pursuit ended when officers neutralized a suspect who had allegedly struck a pedestrian and rammed several public transit vehicles.

The incident began around 5:30 p.m. when police were alerted that a white Mercedes with Michigan license plates was in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. The vehicle was wanted in connection with a shooting that had occurred hours earlier on the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) near Oak Park, which had blocked traffic during the afternoon rush hour but resulted in no injuries.

The Pursuit and Alley Collision

According to the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA), an unmarked police vehicle first tried to engage Jordan in the 800 block of North Homan Avenue. Jordan fled, striking a female pedestrian in a crosswalk during his initial escape.

The pursuit continued through a nearby alley, ending near West Chicago and North Homan avenues. There, the Mercedes became wedged between a CTA bus and another vehicle. Witness video and police statements indicate that Jordan continued to reverse and accelerate, hitting an unmarked squad car and ramming the bus multiple times in a desperate attempt to break free.

The Fatal Confrontation

Verified social media footage shows officers surrounding the Mercedes with weapons drawn, shouting commands for Jordan to exit the vehicle. COPA officials stated that as Jordan drove toward the bus, one officer fired at the vehicle, striking him.

Jordan sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. Officers on the scene performed chest compressions until he was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A firearm was recovered from the scene, though authorities are still investigating the "comprehensive use of force" involving the officer's firearm.

Casualties and Aftermath

The incident resulted in three hospitalizations:

  • The Pedestrian: The woman struck in the crosswalk was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition with lower-body injuries.

  • Police Officers: Two officers were hospitalized in good condition for minor injuries sustained during the confrontation.

COPA and the CPD’s Investigative Response Team are currently analyzing electronic evidence and witness testimony. The officers involved have been placed on routine administrative duties for a minimum of 30 days.

Community Reaction

The shooting occurred in a high-traffic area, leaving residents like Chris Mathae shaken. Mathae, who witnessed the aftermath from his porch, expressed frustration over recurring criminal activity on his block, noting that he and his neighbors had already planned to meet with 27th Ward Alderman Walter Burnett Jr. to discuss safety concerns.

"I feel like we’re a little bit forgotten over here," Mathae said, citing frequent drug-related activity near his home where children walk to school.
