BALTIMORE, MARYLAND — Months after Maryland hairstylist Jayla Cunningham was sentenced after a widely publicized salon assault involving a teenage client, another violent incident in the state has drawn attention. This time, a violence prevention worker is accused of shooting a man after a physical confrontation inside a Baltimore gas station.

Antoine Burton, 51, was arrested Sunday and charged with attempted first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, and multiple firearms offenses.

Antoine Burton was arrested following the Baltimore shooting.

Gas Station Fight Captured on Video

According to the Baltimore Police Department, the incident occurred at a Sunoco gas station on the 4400 block of Park Heights Avenue.

Police said Burton and a 40-year-old man were both inside the store when a confrontation began.

Surveillance footage obtained by local media reportedly shows the two men wrestling on the floor of the business before the victim broke away and ran outside.

Investigators said Burton chased after him.

Shots Fired During Pursuit

Video reviewed by investigators allegedly shows Burton raising a handgun and firing twice as the other man attempted to flee.

Police said the victim was struck once in the leg and once in the back.

Emergency responders treated the victim, who survived the shooting.

Authorities have not released additional information about his condition.

Arrest Made Nearby

Police said officers located Burton shortly after the shooting in the 2400 block of Loyola Northway, less than a mile from the gas station.

Authorities said he was taken into custody without incident.

Burton was later charged and ordered held without bond.

Role With Violence Prevention Program

At the time of the shooting, Burton was employed by Safe Streets Baltimore.

The organization describes itself as a community-based violence prevention program that works to reduce gun violence through outreach, conflict mediation, and intervention efforts.

The program has operated in Baltimore since 2007 and focuses on preventing violent conflicts before they escalate.

Surveillance video allegedly captured the confrontation.

Mayor Responds

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott issued a statement following Burton's arrest.

"I am furious," the mayor said.

Scott called Burton's alleged actions a betrayal of the trust placed in violence intervention workers and said the incident does not reflect the broader work performed by Safe Streets employees.

He also expressed support for the victim and wished him a full recovery.

Court Proceedings Ahead

Burton remains jailed without bond.

Court records show he is scheduled to return for a preliminary hearing on July 8.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue reviewing surveillance footage and witness statements related to the shooting.
