TEMPLE HILLS, MARYLAND — A Maryland hairstylist who went viral after posting video of herself dragging a 15-year-old client across a salon floor during a payment dispute has been sentenced to six months of home detention, according to local reporting. Jayla Cunningham, 19, was convicted in November of second-degree assault.

Video Posted by Stylist Became Key Evidence

The case gained widespread attention after Cunningham posted video of the March 2, 2025 incident online. The footage circulated widely and was later used as evidence during the criminal case, according to reporting.

Dispute Centered on Payment for Hair Service

Reports said the dispute began after Cunningham completed a weave installation that cost $150. Video described in reporting appears to show Cunningham pulling the teen by her hood and ordering her to stay in the salon.

Cunningham later told a local television station she believed the client tried to leave without paying and said she pulled the teen back inside while waiting to be paid or for police to arrive. She also said she used scissors to cut out the weave following the dispute.

The incident followed a dispute over payment for a $150 hair service, according to reports.

Mother Filed Charge; Teen Disputed Intent to Avoid Payment

The teen’s mother filed a charge after the incident. Reporting also described the family’s claim that the teen did not attempt to avoid payment but instead sent payment to the wrong address. They also alleged the minor’s hair was pulled during the altercation.

Footage from inside the salon showed the teen being pulled by her hood during the confrontation.

Judge Ordered Classes and Treatment

During sentencing, Cunningham expressed remorse in court, according to reporting. She also cited mental health struggles and an abusive relationship at the time of the incident.

As part of the sentence, Cunningham was ordered to complete anger management classes and undergo mental health treatment.
