WILSON, NORTH CAROLINA — Dason Garner, a North Carolina veterinary technician, has been charged and fired from her job after rescuing a dog abandoned during a winter storm and then refusing to surrender the animal to authorities. Investigators said Garner is facing charges that include keeping a stray animal, failure to surrender, and interfering with law enforcement.

Doorbell Video Sparked the Investigation
The case began after doorbell footage showed a person leaving a shaggy dog on a neighbor’s front porch and quickly walking away. The person was later identified as Ashley Baker, and she has been charged with animal abandonment in connection with the incident.

Animal Control Request Led to Criminal Charges
Garner reported the abandoned dog to animal control but was instructed to bring the animal in for an investigation. Garner refused, saying she believed the dog would be safer staying at her home. The Wilson County Sheriff’s Office said Garner was told multiple times to turn the dog over.
Authorities later filed charges against Garner tied to her refusal to surrender the animal.
Storm Conditions Raised Concern for the Dog’s Safety
The dog was found during a severe winter storm that brought freezing conditions and heavy snowfall across the region. Reports noted that Wilson recorded roughly 11 inches of snow during the storm system, and Garner said she acted out of concern that the dog would not survive the cold if left outside.

Dog Reunited With Owner After Two Months Missing
Garner later made contact with the dog’s rightful owner, who had been searching for the pet for more than two months. The dog was ultimately reunited with its owner, according to the report.
Job Termination and Upcoming Court Case
Garner said she was fired from her position at an animal clinic in nearby Rocky Mount following the incident. She also stated she is now facing legal expenses and court proceedings as the case moves forward.
