Gun Jams Twice as Shoplifting Suspect Tries to Execute Police Officer in Ohio Walmart

December 21, 2025

CANTON, OHIO – A terrifying scene unfolded inside an Ohio Walmart when a routine shoplifting detention turned into a near-execution. Bodycam footage captures the chilling moment a suspect pulled a concealed gun and attempted to shoot a police officer in the head at point-blank range, only to be saved by a miraculous malfunction.

Shane Newman and Katerina Jeffrey were detained for shoplifting before the situation exploded into a life-or-death struggle.

The Click of Death

The incident occurred on Thursday in Canton, Ohio. Police had detained 21-year-old Shane Newman and a female accomplice, Katerina Jeffrey, for allegedly stealing items from the store. The pair were taken to a small security office for processing.

The atmosphere appeared calm initially. Bodycam footage shows the officer questioning Newman while a Walmart employee assists. Moments before the violence, the officer asked Newman if he had any weapons. Newman claimed he only had a cellphone and handed over a container of illegal drugs. When Jeffrey asked if they were going to jail, the officer ironically replied, "Not unless something crazy happens."

In a split second, Newman pulled a concealed firearm and pulled the trigger while aiming at the officer's head.

"No, No, No!"

Seconds after the officer received a radio alert that Newman was wanted and considered "armed and dangerous," the suspect made his move. Newman suddenly spun around, pulled a gun from a shoulder bag the officer had missed during the initial search, and pointed it directly at the officer's head.

A sickening clicking sound is heard on the video as Newman pulled the trigger. The gun jammed. As Jeffrey screamed "No, no, no!" a quick-thinking Walmart employee lunged at Newman. As they wrestled, Newman raised the gun and tried to fire a second time. Again, the gun clicked but failed to discharge.

A Walmart employee knocked the gun from Newman's hand, allowing the officer to pin him down until backup arrived.

Attempted Murder Charges

The store employee managed to knock the weapon from Newman's hands, allowing the officer to draw his service weapon and pin the suspect to the floor. The officer later admitted he would have shot Newman but held his fire to avoid hitting the brave employee struggling with the gunman.

Newman has been charged with attempted murder and felonious assault on a police officer. Jeffrey faces charges of complicity to commit robbery.
