NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK — Homicide detectives are leading a suspicious death investigation after a woman in her 30s was found dead on a sidewalk in Manhattan's Lower East Side early Sunday morning, November 16, showing visible head trauma.
Bystander Discovery Near Luther Gulick Park
The discovery was made around 7:45 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of Broome and Columbia streets, specifically near 98 Broome Street. This location places the body in a busy, public area just adjacent to Luther Gulick Park and close to the Williamsburg Bridge.

According to law-enforcement sources, the victim's body was lying "in public view" when a bystander happened upon the scene and immediately called 911 to report the discovery.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel quickly responded but pronounced the woman dead at the scene. Police noted the presence of a head wound consistent with trauma, raising immediate red flags for potential criminal activity.
Investigation Focuses on Foul Play
Given the nature of the visible injury, police are officially treating the case as a suspicious death and are actively investigating it as a possible slaying. The immediate vicinity was sealed off with crime tape as investigators from the New York Police Department (NYPD) worked to gather evidence.

Detectives are canvassing the neighborhood, speaking with residents and business owners to look for potential witnesses who may have seen anything unusual in the hours leading up to the discovery. They are also seeking surveillance footage from nearby establishments that might have captured the incident or the moments preceding it.
As of the latest reports, the victim has not been formally identified, pending notification of her family. Furthermore, no arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.

Medical Examiner to Determine Cause of Death
The official cause and manner of death must be determined by the City Medical Examiner’s Office (ME). This crucial step will clarify the exact nature of the head trauma and confirm whether it was inflicted by another person (ruling it a homicide). Police will rely on the ME's findings to guide the next phase of their investigation, which will focus on establishing a timeline and motive once the victim is identified.
