- Six women hiking in Northern California confronted an elderly man over a parking dispute
- The confrontation escalated when one woman used bear spray against the man
- No charges have been filed, and the police investigation remains closed to the public
NORTHERN CALIFORNIA — Just over two months after a California woman made national headlines when she was arrested by Phoenix police at the end of her wedding night in a case that raised major questions about power and accountability, California is back in the middle of an internet debate — this time over a hiking trail confrontation that ended with an elderly man getting a face full of bear spray, and nobody quite able to agree on whether he deserved it.
It Started Over a Parking Spot
Six women had driven out to a Northern California hiking trail to celebrate a birthday. According to one of the women, who later explained the situation in a follow-up TikTok, an elderly man approached them almost immediately and confronted them about where they had parked their car.
She said there were no visible "No Parking" signs in the area and that other vehicles were already parked there. That did not satisfy the man. She claimed he reprimanded them, spoke to them in a demeaning way, and continued his aggressive tone even after they told him they were leaving.
The recorded portion of the video begins after the argument was already underway.
A Fishing Rod, a Backpack, and Bear Spray
In the footage, the elderly man is wearing a backpack and holding what appears to be a fishing rod. He walks toward one of the women, pointing the rod in her direction. One of the other women — who had brought bear spray on the hike as a precaution against wildlife — reached for the canister and sprayed him directly.
The man immediately backed away from the spray. He briefly moved forward again before retreating a second time and the confrontation ended.
In her follow-up TikTok, the woman addressed the most common criticism she received — that the man appeared to be walking away when the spray was used.
"He wasn't walking away," she wrote. "He was going at another one of our friends. There were six of us, we were just all spread out."

It Did Not End at the Trail
After the group left the area, one of the women alleged the situation escalated further. She claimed the man followed their vehicle in his own and threw objects at their car as they drove away.
The women filed a police report, stating they believed they had acted in self-defense throughout the encounter. They also alleged the man gave authorities an inaccurate account of what had happened.
Notably, the man did not press charges against the women.
Police confirmed they received reports about the incident but have not publicly announced any findings or charges for either party as of publication.

The Internet Cannot Agree
The video spread fast and the comment sections became a debate with no clear winner.
On one side, many people felt the bear spray was an assault — particularly because the footage appears to show the man moving away from the group at the moment the canister was fired.
"That is a straight-up assault," one viewer wrote. "He wasn't even walking towards that girl. I hope he presses charges and we get to see her cry in a booking photo."
A person claiming to be a former police officer weighed in: "As a former police officer, she can be charged with assault, and depending on how old he is, those charges could go up if it's assault on a senior. Was he childish? Absolutely. But he was also absolutely walking away from the situation."
Another commenter put it plainly: "He wasn't an angel, but he did start to walk away, and she then decided to attack with a weapon."
On the other side, others felt the women were fully justified and that the moment of spraying needs to be understood in the context of what had happened before the camera was rolling.
"These young women told him to walk away multiple times, but he refused to listen," one viewer wrote. "They stood their ground and used pepper spray to protect themselves after he ignored their repeated demands."
Another added: "He was aggressively walking towards another person off camera. She did good."
Where Things Stand
Neither the elderly man nor any of the women have been publicly identified. No charges have been filed. No official police findings have been released. The investigation, if one is formally underway, remains closed to the public.
What is clear is that a group of women went hiking for a birthday, ended up in a confrontation over a parking spot, and left the trail with a story — and millions of strangers are still arguing about whether they handled it correctly.
