SANDY SPRINGS, GEORGIA — Less than a month after body-camera footage captured former UFC champion Dustin Poirier’s arrest at Atlanta’s main airport, another unusual arrest in the Atlanta metropolitan area has attracted widespread attention. This time, dash-camera footage showed a wanted suspect’s SUV landing partially on a Sandy Springs police cruiser during an attempted escape.
The Sandy Springs Police Department identified the suspect as Jorge Luis Delgado-Bermudez.
Police said he was wanted in Fulton County on multiple drug charges, including offenses involving methamphetamine and cocaine. Authorities also said he faced federal charges and was believed to have ties to a larger criminal organization.
Police and Federal Agents Locate Wanted Suspect
The incident occurred on Friday, July 17, when the Sandy Springs Police Department’s Street Crimes Unit assisted the Homeland Security Investigations Atlanta Field Office in locating Delgado-Bermudez.
Officers found him near 8101 Colquitt Road in Sandy Springs, a city located north of Atlanta.
Police said officers attempted to safely box in Delgado-Bermudez’s vehicle to prevent him from leaving. A box-in generally involves positioning law-enforcement vehicles around another vehicle to restrict its movement.
Delgado-Bermudez allegedly drove away instead, beginning a brief attempt to escape.
SUV Strikes Barrier and Lands on Cruiser
During the attempted escape, police said Delgado-Bermudez’s SUV struck a concrete barrier.
The impact lifted the rear of the SUV into the air. Dash-camera footage showed one of its rear wheels rising near the windshield of a patrol vehicle before the SUV came to rest partially on top of the cruiser.
Some social-media posts claimed that an officer deliberately drove the patrol cruiser beneath the SUV. However, that description is not supported by the police account or established local reporting.
Authorities said the suspect’s collision with the concrete barrier caused the SUV to rise and land on the cruiser. Police did not say that the officer intentionally rammed the SUV or positioned the patrol vehicle beneath it.
The department did not publicly disclose the extent of the damage to either vehicle.
Suspect Allegedly Runs From Crash
After the SUV came to a stop, Delgado-Bermudez allegedly left the vehicle and attempted to escape on foot.
Officers chased him and quickly took him into custody. Police reported that no officers or members of the public were injured during the encounter.
Authorities have not publicly announced whether Delgado-Bermudez received additional charges related to the attempted escape, collision or alleged foot pursuit.
Officials also did not disclose where he was being held following his arrest.
Goose Seen Near Police Vehicles
The footage drew additional attention because a goose could be seen moving near the police vehicles as the attempted arrest unfolded.
Viral posts claimed that the bird narrowly escaped being killed. However, authorities did not discuss the goose in their public statement, and no animal was reported struck or injured.
The available footage confirms only that the goose was close to the scene. It does not establish that the bird was directly in the SUV’s path or that it narrowly escaped death.
Drug and Federal Allegations
Sandy Springs police said Delgado-Bermudez was wanted on multiple Fulton County charges involving methamphetamine and cocaine.
Authorities also alleged that he faced additional federal charges and had ties to a larger criminal organization. However, officials did not publicly identify that organization or provide details about the federal allegations.
The initial reports did not disclose the quantities of drugs allegedly involved, when the suspected offenses occurred or whether the state and federal allegations arose from the same investigation.
