WATCH: Bodycam Shows Dustin Poirier Arrested at Atlanta Airport After Delta Boarding Dispute

June 26, 2026

  • Former UFC champion Dustin Poirier was arrested at Atlanta International Airport after being denied boarding for appearing intoxicated.
  • Bodycam footage shows Poirier yelling at Delta staff and challenging officers to fight during the confrontation.
  • Poirier admitted in an Instagram statement that he needed help and acknowledged the negative impact of alcohol on his life.

ATLANTA, GEORGIA — Weeks after a 66-year-old great-grandmother was fatally stabbed on an Atlanta MARTA train, another public safety incident in the city has drawn national attention. This time, former UFC interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier was arrested inside Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport after a dispute with Delta staff.

The 37-year-old retired fighter was removed from Delta Flight DL1295 to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Sunday, June 21, after airline staff said he appeared intoxicated and denied him boarding.

Atlanta police said officers were called to Delta Gate D36 around 4:50 p.m. When they arrived, they found Poirier visibly upset, yelling profanities at Delta employees, and acting aggressively toward officers.

Bodycam Shows Airport Confrontation

Body camera footage released by Atlanta police showed the first responding officer approaching Poirier near the gate area.

The officer appeared to recognize Poirier from his fighting career and quickly tried to keep the situation calm. In the video, Poirier repeatedly argued about being removed from the flight while other members of his group were allowed to stay onboard.

At one point, Poirier appeared to challenge the officer to fight. The officer responded that he did not want to fight and continued telling Poirier to relax.

As the situation grew tense, the officer requested backup because of Poirier’s combative behavior. Gate agents moved away from the desk as Poirier continued speaking loudly and walking near the officers.

Taken Into Custody Without Further Incident

When additional officers arrived, Poirier told them to arrest him. He was then handcuffed without further physical confrontation.

Police said he was transported to Clayton County Jail and charged with public intoxication.

As he was led away from the gate, Poirier appeared to calm down. In the footage, he offered the first responding officer a fist bump and said the officer had done what he could.

Atlanta police noted that the information released was preliminary and that an arrest does not mean a person has been convicted of a crime. Poirier is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Life After UFC Retirement

Poirier retired from professional fighting after his July 2025 trilogy bout with Max Holloway at UFC 318 in New Orleans.

Holloway won the fight by unanimous decision, ending Poirier’s long UFC career in front of a Louisiana crowd. Poirier finished his professional MMA career with a 30-10 record and one no-contest.

Before the airport incident, Poirier had spoken publicly about the emotional difficulty of leaving competition behind. During a podcast appearance earlier this year, he said retirement felt frightening because his daily life was no longer built around preparing for fights.

He described feeling stuck after walking away from the sport that had shaped his adult life.

Poirier Says He Needs Help

After the bodycam video became public, Poirier addressed the arrest in a statement on Instagram.

He said he had reached a point where he needed help and admitted that walking away from fighting had not been easy. He also said alcohol was not the answer and referenced the damage it had caused in his father’s life.

Poirier said he did not want alcohol to harm his own life or family, adding that his family deserves him at full strength. He said he is trying to take the right steps and get his mind right.

The statement shifted part of the public reaction from shock over the arrest video to concern over the challenges some athletes face after retirement.

Poirier later said he needed help and acknowledged that alcohol was not the answer after the airport arrest.

A Career Built on High-Profile Fights

Poirier remains one of the most recognizable names from the UFC lightweight division.

He fought several of the sport’s biggest names, including Max Holloway, Conor McGregor, Justin Gaethje, Charles Oliveira, and Islam Makhachev. He was known for his durability, pressure, and willingness to take difficult fights throughout his career.

His arrest came less than a year after his retirement fight, making the airport video especially jarring for fans who followed his career.

For now, the legal case involves a public intoxication charge, while Poirier’s own comments suggest he is also dealing with a personal struggle away from competition.
