ATLANTA, GEORGIA — Weeks after a Georgia mayor fired the entire police department after a dispute involving his wife, another Georgia public safety case is raising anger and heartbreak. This time, a 66-year-old great-grandmother was killed in a random stabbing on a MARTA train in Atlanta.
Margaret Swan was riding alone on the train Saturday morning when police say 25-year-old John Elijah Matthews attacked her without warning. Swan was a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and retired parent coordinator with Atlanta Public Schools.

Random Attack on MARTA Train
The stabbing happened around 11:20 a.m. on a MARTA train near Oakland City Station.
According to an arrest warrant cited by local reports, surveillance footage showed Matthews boarding the train and standing near Swan before pulling out a knife. Police say he slit her throat and stabbed her about 18 to 20 more times.
Swan tried to escape and screamed for help, but her daughter, Shanae Sams, said no one stepped in.
Police said Matthews later left Swan on the floor of the train in a pool of blood. He was arrested on the Oakland City Station platform while still carrying a knife, according to reports.

Family Blames Security Gaps
Sams said her family is devastated and angry. She said her mother was the rock of their family and a loving person who would help anyone.
She also criticized MARTA over what she described as poor security and weak patrols.
At the time, MARTA had recently allowed free rides during renovations and the rollout of new fare gates. Some old gates and emergency doors were reportedly left open for a period during the work.
Sams said the open access made the system feel unsafe and that more police should have been patrolling the trains and stations.
Suspect Facing Murder Charge
Matthews, who was reportedly homeless, is being held at the Fulton County Jail. He faces one count of felony murder.
MARTA police said the attack appeared to be random. The Associated Press reported that Matthews did not appear to know Swan and did not target other passengers.
Police have not released a motive.

MARTA Responds
MARTA said it mourns Swan’s death and offered condolences to her family.
A MARTA representative said the agency has thousands of employees, 280 sworn officers, 30 field specialists, and about 12,000 security cameras across trains, buses, and stations. The agency also said it uses undercover officers and is increasing security before the FIFA World Cup in Atlanta.
Still, Swan’s family says the attack should never have happened.
Loved Ones Remember Margaret Swan
Swan’s family remembered her as kind, loving, and deeply important to everyone around her.
Sams said there are no words to explain the family’s grief. She said they feel lost, confused, angry, and scared after losing someone who held the family together.
For her loved ones, the attack was not only violent, but preventable. They are now calling for stronger security so no other family has to go through the same pain.
