LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA A titan of the video game industry has met a sudden and violent end on a treacherous stretch of road in Southern California. Vince Zampella the visionary mind behind the billion dollar Call of Duty franchise was killed over the weekend in a fiery crash that left authorities stunned by the devastation.

Vince Zampella 55 was the head of Respawn Entertainment and co creator of Infinity Ward before his tragic death.

A Fiery Wreck

The tragedy unfolded on Sunday December 21 around 12 43 pm local time. Authorities received a report of a traffic crash on the Angeles Crest Highway involving a single vehicle traveling southbound near Mile Post Marker 62 70.

For unknown reasons the vehicle veered off the roadway and struck a concrete barrier with massive force. The impact was catastrophic causing the vehicle to become fully engulfed in flames immediately.

Trapped in the Inferno

The California Highway Patrol released a chilling account of the scene. They stated that the passenger was ejected from the vehicle during the crash while the driver remained trapped inside the burning wreckage.

Both parties succumbed to their injuries and died at the scene. Authorities stated it is uncertain whether drugs or alcohol were responsible for the crash and the names were initially withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Electronic Arts confirmed the death calling it an unimaginable loss for the industry and the family of Zampella.

Electronic Arts the parent company of Respawn Entertainment confirmed the death of Zampella in a statement to PEOPLE. They described the event as an unimaginable loss and noted that the influence Zampella had on the video game industry was profound and far reaching.

Zampella co created the studio Infinity Ward in 2002 and launched Call of Duty in 2003. The franchise went on to sell 500 million copies and shaped modern interactive entertainment for millions of players around the world.
