MOSCOW, RUSSIA — A 22-year-old man from Russia’s Udmurt Republic and a police officer were killed early Tuesday in an apparent suicide bombing near a major railway station in downtown Moscow.
The incident occurred just after midnight on Feb. 24, 2026, near the Savyolovsky railway station. According to Moscow’s branch of the Interior Ministry, the assailant approached a traffic police patrol vehicle and detonated an explosive device.
Investigation and Alleged Remote Detonation
Russia’s top investigative agency has identified the attacker as a 22-year-old male from the Udmurt Republic, located approximately 1,100 kilometers east of Moscow.
In a meeting with officials from the Federal Security Service (FSB), President Vladimir Putin alleged that the young man had been recruited through online platforms. Putin suggested that the assailant may have been carrying the explosive device unknowingly and that the detonation was performed remotely by an outside party. State media reports indicate that while the targeted patrol car sustained heavy structural damage, it did not catch fire.
