
NORTH CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA — The North Charleston Police Department has launched an internal investigation after videos began circulating online showing an interaction between an officer and a juvenile during a call at a local CVS. The youth was arrested and charged following the incident, which occurred last Thursday afternoon.
The department’s Office of Professional Standards has been notified, and a review of body-worn camera footage is underway.
The Incident
According to a statement from the North Charleston Police Department, officers were dispatched to the CVS at 5215 Ashley Phosphate Road around 1:32 p.m. on Thursday, September 25, for a report of a disturbance involving an allegedly armed young man.
Upon arrival, officers located the individual and detained him after what was described as a "brief struggle." Police confirmed that no weapon was found on the juvenile and that no injuries were reported during the encounter.
Charges and Investigation
The juvenile, who has not been named due to his age, was charged with third-degree assault and breach of peace. He was later released into the custody of a parent.
In their statement, police acknowledged the public's attention on the incident due to videos being shared on social media.
“Body-worn camera footage is being reviewed, and the Office of Professional Standards has been notified,” the agency said. “We remain committed to transparency, accountability, and respectful engagement with the community.”
