November 8, 2025

MIAMI, FLORIDA — Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Deputy Devin Jaramillo, 27, was fatally shot on Friday afternoon while responding to a reported traffic crash in the Kendall area. Authorities say the young deputy was “brutally attacked and murdered” during the encounter.

The incident occurred shortly before 4 p.m. near the intersection of Southwest 128th Street and 122nd Avenue, in the unincorporated Three Lakes area of Miami-Dade County. Investigators said Deputy Jaramillo was shot in the neck during a struggle with at least one individual after arriving at the crash scene.

Suspect Dead, Investigation Ongoing

Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz confirmed that Jaramillo was rushed to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

According to investigators, the individual believed to have shot the deputy was later found dead nearby from what sources described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A second person was detained for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation.

Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Deputy Devin Jaramillo, 27, was fatally shot while responding to a traffic crash in the Kendall area on Friday.

While early reports from law enforcement sources suggested the shooting may have been linked to a prior domestic-violence call, authorities have not yet confirmed a motive. Sheriff Cordero-Stutz said the investigation is active and urged the public to avoid speculation.

“Today is not OK,” Sheriff Cordero-Stutz said in a press briefing. “What happened today in Miami-Dade County and to our deputy was not OK, and today will never be OK. He gave his ultimate sacrifice defending us — his life — defending you.”

Community Honors a Fallen Deputy

Deputy Jaramillo, who joined the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office in 2024, had previously served for nearly four years with the Coral Gables Police Department, where he was recognized as Officer of the Month in 2023.

Coming from a family deeply rooted in law enforcement, Jaramillo’s father is a retired Miami-Dade police detective.

Hundreds of first responders from across Florida, including members of the FBI, Florida Highway Patrol, and Coral Gables Police Department, gathered in a solemn procession to honor his service. Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava called the loss “devastating” and extended condolences to Jaramillo’s family and colleagues.
