HOUSTON, TEXAS — Jamar Champ, the 38-year-old estranged husband of “Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood” star Masika Kalysha, was killed in a fiery, wrong-way crash in Houston early Tuesday morning. The head-on collision involved three vehicles, including Champ's Tesla Cybertruck, and also resulted in the death of the wrong-way driver.
The crash occurred just after midnight on the Katy Freeway (West Interstate Highway 10) near Washington Avenue. According to the Houston Police Department, a silver BMW was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes when it struck Champ's silver Cybertruck head-on. The force of the impact caused the Cybertruck to then crash into an 18-wheeler. The BMW subsequently caught fire.
The driver of the wrong-way BMW was pronounced dead at the scene. Champ was transported to a local hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead. His family confirmed his identity to local news. The driver and passenger of the 18-wheeler were not injured and remained at the scene as witnesses.
Police are investigating how the BMW entered the freeway going the wrong direction despite numerous warning signs. An autopsy is expected to determine if impairment was a factor.
Kalysha, who was in the process of divorcing Champ, alluded to the tragedy in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, writing, “I just received the worse [sic] news of my life. Pray for me and my kids please”. She later posted a tearful video on Instagram asking outlets to "refrain from posting information" so she could tell her children before they heard the news from friends at school.
Champ leaves behind a daughter (Amari, 3) and stepdaughter (Khari, 9).
In a formal statement, Kalysha confirmed the "tragic and unexpected passing of my spouse and father of my beautiful daughters, Jamar Champ".
The couple, who married in 2021 , share a 3-year-old daughter, Amari. Champ was also stepfather to Kalysha’s 9-year-old daughter, Khari, from her previous relationship with rapper Fetty Wap. Kalysha had confirmed in 2024 that they had been separated throughout 2023 and were in the midst of a "vicious" mediation.
