WATCH: Houston Metro Bus Plunges Off Overpass, Injures 14 Including One Critically

January 4, 2026

HOUSTON, TEXAS — A Metro bus veered off a bridge and crashed down an embankment near Highway 288 on Saturday, injuring 14 people, including one who had to be extricated and remains in critical condition, according to officials.

Bus Rear-Ended Before Plunge Off Midtown Bridge

The dramatic rollover occurred just after 2:30 p.m. on January 3, 2026, in Houston’s Midtown district. According to preliminary reports, a vehicle rear-ended the Metro bus on McGowen Street as it traveled across a bridge over Texas Highway 288. The impact forced the bus to careen off the side and down a steep slope.

The bus came to rest on a grassy embankment beneath the overpass. Emergency responders said 14 people were onboard. The bus operator was not injured, but most passengers sustained moderate injuries. One person was critically hurt and required extensive rescue operations.

Emergency Crews Use Jaws of Life in Rescue

Houston Fire Department officials said about 30 personnel and six ambulances responded. One passenger was trapped inside the wrecked bus and had to be extracted using the Jaws of Life and “almost every cutting tool that we had,” according to HFD Capt. Mario Gordon. The extrication took approximately 45 minutes.

The critically injured passenger was transported to a local hospital. Officials confirmed that the remaining passengers suffered non-life-threatening injuries, including lacerations and possible fractures. Most were taken for medical evaluation as a precaution.

Texas DOT to Cut Slope for Bus Removal

As part of the recovery effort, the Texas Department of Transportation planned to “cut the embankment” to safely lower and remove the bus. HFD Deputy Chief Isaac Garcia said the bus remained on the slope for several hours while crews worked to stabilize it and monitor for fuel or fluid leaks.

Metro police are continuing to investigate the incident. Authorities remained at the scene into the afternoon to survey damage, check for hazards, and assess structural integrity along the bridge.

Transit Safety Raised After Overpass Crash

The incident has sparked renewed concern over elevated roadway safety and the ability of guardrails to contain large vehicles. Transportation experts say even low-speed impacts can turn catastrophic depending on road angle, railing strength, and vehicle design.

Houston Metro has upgraded much of its fleet in recent years, adding reinforced fronts and advanced braking systems. However, aging overpasses with inconsistent barrier protections remain an issue in parts of the city. Officials have not yet said whether the guardrails failed or were overwhelmed by the crash impact.

Saturday’s accident follows a pattern of rare but high-risk overpass incidents involving public buses. In 2023, a similar case in New York left several injured after a bus partially dangled from an expressway bridge.

As of January 5, 2026, no charges have been announced in relation to the crash. Metro police and traffic investigators are reviewing video evidence, vehicle data, and overpass conditions to determine whether driver behavior, road design, or equipment failure played a role.

Officials have not ruled out further review of guardrail integrity or potential liability if negligence contributed to the severity of the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
