A Senseless Tragedy

The violence erupted just before 11 p.m. on November 22 outside a home in Hempstead. Nassau County police say Jacob McMillan opened fire on the crowd, striking three people.

The gunfire killed 19-year-old Amira McCleod, a standout basketball player for Monroe University. Two other victims, identified only as 20-year-old students from Nassau Community College, were also shot but have since been discharged from the hospital. Detectives are still working to determine if the victims were specifically targeted or if they were tragic bystanders hit by stray bullets.

Dreams Cut Short

McCleod was a Queens native in her sophomore season at the school's Bronx campus. She was known for her defensive skill and had helped her team secure a win over Dutchess Community College just hours before the shooting occurred.

University officials described her as a "cherished member" of the team. She was working toward a degree in business administration and dreamed of continuing her education at a four-year school to eventually open her own clothing and sneaker store.
