VALAIS, SWITZERLAND — A fast-moving fire tore through Le Constellation, a bar in the Swiss ski resort town of Crans-Montana, killing at least 40 people and injuring 119 others during New Year celebrations, according to international reporting and officials.
The blaze broke out at about 1:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 1, 2026, while the venue was packed with partygoers. Many of the injured were reported to be in critical condition, and some were transferred to specialized burn units outside the region.
Investigators Focus on Champagne “Sparkler” Candles
Authorities said early findings suggest the fire may have started when sparkler-style “fountain candles” used on champagne bottles were held too close to the ceiling. Investigators believe the sparks likely ignited ceiling materials, including foam soundproofing or insulation, allowing the fire to spread rapidly across the room.
Officials are also examining crowd conditions and safety measures, including exits and the materials used inside the venue.

Families Wait as Identification Efforts Continue
The condition of some victims has complicated identification efforts. Authorities have been using DNA and dental records, and officials have warned the process could take days.
One victim identified in early reporting was Emanuele Galeppini, a 16-year-old Italian golfer, as tributes and confirmations began to emerge from sports organizations and media outlets.
Teen Reported Missing
A British-educated teenager, Charlotte Niddam, believed to be 15, was reported missing in the aftermath, according to UK reporting. Authorities have not publicly confirmed a final list of the missing, and officials have continued urging patience as identifications proceed.

Criminal Investigation Opened Into Management
Prosecutors in Valais said a criminal investigation has been opened into the bar’s managers. The suspected offenses being examined include homicide by negligence, causing bodily harm by negligence, and arson by negligence. No final conclusions have been announced, and the investigation is ongoing.
