Psychiatric Director With History of Suicide Attempts Freed Dangerous Woman Who Stabbed Mom at Macys

December 20, 2025

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – A shocking investigation has revealed that the psychiatric administrator who authorized the release of a disturbed woman just hours before she stabbed a young mother inside Macys has a troubling history of mental illness herself. Even worse is that the decision to free the dangerous patient was reportedly based on the advice of a temporary doctor who signed the papers and immediately left for a three week vacation.

Caitlin Stork is the clinical director at Manhattan Psychiatric Center who greenlit the release of the attacker despite her own history of severe mental health struggles.

A Deadly Oversight

Caitlin Stork is the 43 year old clinical director of the Manhattan Psychiatric Center and is at the center of a firestorm after approving the release of Kerri Aherne. Sources tell the New York Post that Stork relied on the assessment of a contract psychiatrist hired to fill staffing gaps.

This temporary doctor signed discharge papers for Aherne on December 10 with the blessing of the director and then vanished on a three week holiday. The very next day the failure of the system turned bloody.

Kerri Aherne told police that voices in her head ordered her to kill just one day after being released from the state run facility.

Voices Ordered the Attack

On December 11 free from the oversight of the hospital 43 year old Kerri Aherne walked into Macys Herald Square. She made her way to the eighth floor to purchase a knife and then hunted for a victim. She found a 38 year old mother changing her 10 month old baby in a seventh floor bathroom.

Aherne later confessed that voices were telling her to kill and allegedly hacked the woman repeatedly in the back shoulder and arm while her terrified family was nearby.

Insiders claim there is immense pressure at the facility to push patients out to free up beds and treating dangerous individuals like pieces in a game of musical chairs.

Dark Past of the Director

The revelations about the past of the director have raised serious questions about her judgment. In a 2003 interview Stork admitted to battling bipolar disorder and attempting suicide twice as a teenager. While she later became an advocate for mental health awareness at Harvard insiders describe her current management style as erratic.

One source called Stork a weirdo who brings her dog Lily to the hospital and prioritizes the pet over patient discharges. The insider noted that you should not get discharged if you are hearing voices to kill people and added that Stork is incentivized to cut state costs by emptying beds.

When confronted about the tragedy outside her Upper East Side home Stork reportedly rolled her eyes and sped away.

A Cold Reaction

When confronted by reporters outside her swanky Upper East Side home this week Stork offered no condolences. Instead she reportedly rolled her eyes and exclaimed Oh God before fleeing in a sedan. The state Office of Mental Health stands by Stork claiming all staff are rigorously vetted but for the victim attacked while caring for her infant the failure of the system is unforgivable.
