  • Niceville Police and investigators continue an active inquiry into Lyon’s disappearance, with cause and circumstances of death still under investigation.

MIRAMAR BEACH, FLORIDA — Jacob Lyon, who was reported missing in February 2016 at age 19, has been identified as the person whose skeletal remains were discovered in a wooded area of Miramar Beach in October 2022, according to investigators. Officials said DNA testing confirmed the identification earlier this month, bringing a nine-year search to an end while leaving key questions about how he died unresolved.

Jacob Lyon was reported missing in February 2016 and has now been identified through DNA testing, investigators said.

Remains Discovered During Land Clearing

Investigators said the remains were found on October 20, 2022, after a man clearing wooded land in Miramar Beach discovered skeletal fragments. Deputies and the District 1 Medical Examiner responded and began the process of collecting evidence and working toward identification.

Identification Effort Spanned Years

From 2022 through 2024, the medical examiner’s office continued efforts to determine who the remains belonged to. Because of the condition of the remains, the case was later referred for additional support, and investigators noted that DNA testing was complicated by years of environmental exposure and degradation.

Officials said the Florida Department of Law Enforcement confirmed a positive match to Lyon earlier this month.

Officials said environmental exposure over time complicated DNA testing and slowed the identification process.

Missing Person Case Still Active

Lyon’s disappearance was reported in February 2016, prompting years of investigation by the Niceville Police Department. Investigators said tips and leads were pursued over time, but Lyon was not located.

Authorities have not released where Lyon was last seen or how he may have ended up in Walton County. Investigators said the case remains active and that work is ongoing to determine the circumstances and cause of death.
