INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA — Dana Jermaine Shepherd, 53, has been sentenced to 45 years in an Indiana state prison after pleading guilty to the 1993 killing of 19-year-old Carmen Van Huss, a case that went unsolved for more than three decades.

Sentence Ends Decades-Old Cold Case

The sentence was handed down in Marion County Superior Court after Shepherd entered a guilty plea to murder under a plea agreement in which prosecutors dismissed the remaining charges.

Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears said the conviction was a long-delayed step toward justice for Van Huss’ family after years of uncertainty.

What Happened to Carmen Van Huss

Van Huss was found dead inside her northside apartment in the 8200 block of Harcourt Road in March 1993 after a co-worker alerted family when she didn’t show up for work, according to case summaries and court filings referenced in local reporting.

Carmen Van Huss was 19 when she was killed in Indianapolis in March 1993, a case that remained unsolved for more than 30 years.

A coroner’s report cited in court records found she was stabbed 61 times, and court documents indicated she was also sexually assaulted.

How Investigators Linked Shepherd to the Scene

The case broke open years later through DNA work that helped develop a suspect profile and ultimately led investigators back to Shepherd, who lived in the same apartment complex at the time of the killing.

Authorities arrested Shepherd in August 2024 after DNA evidence tied him to the homicide, ending a decades-long investigation that included renewed testing and database comparisons.

Family Waited Years for Answers

Relatives have described the impact of the killing as permanent, noting that the case stayed with the family for decades while the person responsible remained unidentified.
