
SUFFOLK COUNTY, NEW YORK — Jeffery Vernot, a 36-year-old spectator, faces assault charges after allegedly striking a teenage athlete during a high school basketball game. The incident occurred during a matchup between Half Hollow Hills West and Comsewogue.
Brawl Erupts on Court
The altercation began with just 44 seconds remaining in the game. Players from both teams started pushing and shoving on the court while referees attempted to break up the scuffle.

Video footage aired by local news outlets shows the situation escalating quickly. As coaches and security rushed to intervene, Vernot ran from the stands toward the melee.
Spectator Attacks Student
Vernot allegedly struck a 15-year-old Comsewogue player during the chaos. The video shows the teen stumbling around in pain immediately after the blow.

The game was called off immediately, with Half Hollow Hills West leading 63-52. Both teams left the gym without finishing the final seconds.
Charges and Consequences
Vernot has been charged with third-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child. He was issued an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in court on January 30.

Section XI, the governing body for local high school sports, announced that players involved in the fight will face mandatory two-game suspensions.
