CHARLESTON, WEST VIRGINIA — Jacob Fields, 19, is facing a first-degree murder charge in the death of Tiffany Clerenia Adkins, 42, after investigators said surveillance video contradicted his initial claim that the gun discharged by accident in a Sheetz parking lot.

What Prosecutors Allege
The shooting happened just after midnight on May 27, 2025, at the Sheetz on the 5600 block of MacCorkle Avenue in Charleston’s Kanawha City area, according to charging documents. Investigators said Adkins was walking past Fields’ vehicle when she was struck in the back of the head by a bullet that traveled through the windshield.
Fields initially told officers the gun fired while he was “wiping” down the barrel, the complaint stated.

Surveillance Video Cited In Complaint
After reviewing surveillance footage, investigators said Fields appeared to look toward Adkins, wait until she entered his “field of fire,” and then raise a Glock Model 20 Gen 5 10mm pistol with both hands before firing, according to the criminal complaint.
Authorities said a muzzle flash could be seen on the video and that the windshield shattered at the moment of the shot.

Case Status
Fields was originally arrested on lesser charges, but prosecutors later upgraded the case to murder after the surveillance footage was obtained, WCHS reported.
A trial date in the case was pushed back, with proceedings later rescheduled for February 23, 2026, according to WCHS Network reporting.
