HOPKINTON, RHODE ISLAND — The Rhode Island music community is mourning the loss of Roderick MacLeod, a Grammy-nominated bassist and Hall of Fame inductee, who was struck and killed by a vehicle while walking his dog on Saturday morning. The driver, identified as 41-year-old Shannon Godbout, is a career criminal with a staggering record of more than 100 prior arrests.

"Driving So As to Endanger"
The deadly wreck occurred around 7:20 a.m. in Hopkinton. Police say the driver, 41-year-old Shannon Godbout, veered out of her lane and struck multiple objects, including two telephone poles, before hitting MacLeod as he walked on the shoulder of the road.
MacLeod was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital but was pronounced dead. His dog survived the crash and ran home. At the scene, officers found Godbout in possession of numerous illegal narcotics and packaging materials commonly associated with drug distribution.

A Staggering Criminal Record
Authorities revealed that Godbout is a career criminal with a lengthy history, including more than 100 previous arrests, 82 court warrants, and 40 traffic citations. She has now been charged with driving so as to endanger resulting in death, as well as possession of narcotics with intent to distribute.
She is expected to be presented to the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office as a habitual criminal violator.

A Legacy of Music and Service
MacLeod was a teaching associate at Brown University and a longtime member of the band Roomful of Blues, with whom he received a Grammy nomination in the 1980s. He also served his community for 51 years as a volunteer with the New Hackensack Fire Department.
Friend and fellow musician Doug James remembered MacLeod for his talent and spirit. "He was a good addition to anything he did," James said. "He was always great to be around... 100% of the people that know him would say exactly the same thing."
