FORT WORTH, TEXAS — A quiet morning in a southwest Fort Worth neighborhood was shattered by the sound of gunfire on August 15th, when a homeowner confronted two men attempting to steal his son's 2022 Chevrolet Camaro. The incident, which took place around 1:50 a.m. on Garden Springs Drive, escalated into a shootout that was captured on the family's home security system.
Willie Jones and his son were alerted by their security system to activity outside their home. Rushing to the door, they discovered two masked suspects in the process of breaking into their Camaro. The thieves had already removed the driver's side window and were climbing into the vehicle. The suspects were undeterred by the home's spotlight, which was shining directly on them.
The situation quickly turned violent when one of the suspects, noticing the homeowners, fired two shots toward the house. Jones, exercising his right to protect his property, returned fire. The two suspects then fled the scene, continuing to shoot as they ran to a waiting getaway car – a white 2019-2024 Chevrolet Camaro with a black racing stripe, a sunroof, black wheels, and tinted windows.
Fortunately, no one was injured in the exchange of gunfire. However, the Jones' home was struck by bullets, leaving visible evidence of the shootout. This was not the first time the family had been targeted by car thieves. Last year, their previous Camaro was stolen and never recovered.
Fort Worth police are now asking for the public's help in identifying and locating the two suspects. They are described as two men, one with a heavier build and the other wearing prescription glasses. Both were dressed in hoodies, masks, and dark clothing. Anyone with information is urged to contact Fort Worth police robbery detectives at 817-392-4469.
The incident has left the Jones family shaken but resolute. "They're coming to my yard, my property, trying to get my vehicle," Jones told WFAA. "I'm protecting my property. That's my right." The shootout serves as a stark reminder of the escalating boldness of criminals and the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in combating vehicle theft.
