POLK COUNTY, FLORIDA - A senseless tragedy has destroyed a family just days before Christmas. A Florida man consumed by rage and substance abuse shot his wife and stepdaughter after a trivial argument over a football game turned deadly.
A Game Turns Deadly
The horror unfolded on December 22. Sheriff Grady Judd reported that the violence began when Crystal Kenney suggested her husband turn off the Monday night NFL game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Indianapolis Colts. Jason Kenney had been drinking, and the suggestion sparked a violent rage.
As the argument escalated, Crystal told her 12 year old son to call 911. The boy managed to run to a neighbor's home when he heard gunshots ring out.
Begging for Her Life
Inside the home, Jason shot and killed Crystal. He then turned the gun on his 13 year old stepdaughter. The Sheriff revealed that the young girl begged him not to shoot her, but he pulled the trigger anyway, striking her in the shoulder and face.
Miraculously, she survived and is recovering in a hospital. Deputies also found a one year old baby asleep and unharmed in her crib amidst the carnage.
Suicide in a Shed
Jason fled the scene and called his sister in New York to confess he had done something wrong. He then drove to the home of his father where he barricaded himself in a shed and fatally shot himself as deputies closed in.
A heartbreaking note found during a search of the home revealed the depth of the struggles the family faced. Crystal had written to her husband urging him to get help for his drinking and cocaine use, telling him that he needed God.
