DENVER, COLORADO — A fatal runway breach at Denver International Airport is raising questions about airport security after authorities said a 41-year-old man climbed a perimeter fence and was struck by a departing Frontier Airlines plane. The incident adds to recent Colorado transportation tragedies, including one where a Colorado woman was sentenced to six years for a DUI crash that killed a motorcyclist.

The man was identified as Michael Mott. Officials said he entered a restricted runway area late Friday night, May 8, before being hit by Frontier Airlines Flight 4345 as the aircraft was taking off for Los Angeles.

Michael Mott was identified as the trespasser killed after breaching a restricted runway area at Denver International Airport.

The collision caused an engine fire and forced an emergency evacuation of the plane.

Trespasser Breached Airport Fence

Denver International Airport officials said Mott climbed an approximately 8-foot perimeter fence topped with barbed wire and entered the airfield.

Airport CEO Phil Washington said Mott was on the tarmac for about 2 minutes before the aircraft struck him. Officials said the plane was traveling at high speed during takeoff when the collision occurred.

Frontier Airlines Flight 4345 struck Mott during takeoff, causing an engine fire and emergency evacuation.

Authorities said the runway area was immediately secured after the incident, and emergency crews responded to the aircraft.

Passengers Evacuated After Engine Fire

Frontier Airlines Flight 4345 was carrying 224 passengers and 7 crew members at the time of the incident. The aircraft was bound for Los Angeles when the collision happened.

The impact sparked an engine fire, and passengers were evacuated using emergency slides. Officials said 12 people reported minor injuries, with several taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Officials said Mott climbed an airport perimeter fence before reaching the active runway.

All passengers and crew survived.

Death Ruled Suicide

Denver’s chief medical examiner identified Mott and said his cause of death was multiple blunt and sharp force injuries. Officials ruled the death a suicide.

Authorities said no suicide note had been recovered as of the latest official update.

Denver police said investigators were searching for additional information, including possible notes, electronic devices, or other materials that could help explain what led to the fatal breach.

Criminal History Revealed

Reports citing public records said Mott had a lengthy criminal history in Colorado dating back more than 2 decades.

During one of his prison terms, he was charged with attempted escape in 2017.

His record reportedly included arrests involving trespassing, resisting arrest, domestic violence, burglary, assault, and an attempted murder allegation that was later resolved through a plea to a lesser charge.

Mott had reportedly been arrested about a month before the airport incident on allegations involving criminal trespass and resisting arrest.

Security Questions After Runway Breach

The incident has prompted scrutiny over how Mott was able to breach the airport’s perimeter and reach an active runway.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it was gathering details about the evacuation, while airport officials said they would review security procedures and make improvements where needed.

Airport officials said safety remains their top priority and that the investigation is ongoing.
