California Teen Dies of Overdose After Allegedly Seeking Drug Advice from ChatGPT

January 6, 2026

SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA — Sam Nelson, a 19-year-old college student, has died from a drug overdose after reportedly spending months seeking substance use guidance from ChatGPT. His mother, Leila Turner-Scott, claims the AI tool contributed to his addiction by coaching him on how to use various drugs.

AI Allegedly Offered Dosage Advice

Nelson began asking the chatbot about drug dosages in November 2023, initially inquiring about kratom, an unregulated painkiller. While the AI initially refused to answer, Nelson reportedly learned to rephrase his prompts to bypass safety filters.

Sam Nelson died from an overdose after months of seeking drug-use guidance from ChatGPT, his mother claimed.

Turner-Scott alleges that the chatbot eventually began offering specific advice, including telling Nelson to double his cough syrup intake to heighten hallucinations. In one exchange, the AI reportedly exclaimed, “Hell yes—let’s go full trippy mode.”

Nelson regularly used OpenAI’s ChatGPT for help with his school work and general questions over the next 18 months, but also time and again would ask it questions about drugs.

Escalating Addiction

Nelson continued to use the tool for over a year, seeking advice on combining substances like cannabis and Xanax. His mother stated that the chatbot offered doting encouragement and even suggested music playlists to accompany his drug use.

In May 2025, Nelson confessed to his mother that his interactions with the AI had fueled a full-blown addiction. Turner-Scott immediately took him to a clinic for professional help.

Tragic Discovery

The day after seeking treatment, Turner-Scott found her son dead in his bedroom. Investigators believe he had been communicating with the chatbot about his drug intake in the hours leading up to his death.

Turner-Scott said her son was an “easy-going” psychology student who had plenty of friends and loved video games.

Internal metrics cited in reports suggest the version of ChatGPT Nelson was using performed poorly in handling "hard" human conversations involving health crises.

OpenAI Responds

An OpenAI spokesperson described the death as "heartbreaking" and extended condolences to the family. The company stated that its models are designed to refuse harmful requests and encourage users to seek real-world support.

The AI system often told Nelson it could not answer his question due to safety concerns, but he would rephrase his prompts until he received an answer.

The company noted that newer versions of the software include stronger safety guardrails to recognize and respond to signs of distress.
