Au Pair’s Selfies With Brendan Banfield Spotlighted in Court as Double-Murder Case Plays Out

January 20, 2026

  • Jurors were shown late 2022 selfies and captions of Brazilian au pair Juliana Peres Magalhães with Brendan Banfield, including a bathtub photo.
  • Prosecutors say the relationship established during her au pair stay helps explain an alleged plot leading to Christine Banfield’s and Joseph Ryan’s deaths.
  • Investigators allege Ryan was lured to the Herndon home via communications tied to an online sexual-fetish scenario and staged events.
  • Magalhães pleaded guilty to manslaughter in October 2023 and awaits sentencing after Banfield’s ongoing trial, where he pleads not guilty.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VIRGINIA — Selfies posted by Brazilian au pair Juliana Peres Magalhães showing her with Brendan Banfield have become a flashpoint in the ongoing court case, after images and captions from late 2022 were presented to jurors during proceedings.

Juliana Peres Magalhães appears in a booking photo released by authorities.

Banfield, a former IRS employee, is on trial in connection with the deaths of his wife, Christine Banfield, and Joseph Ryan at the couple’s home in Herndon. Prosecutors allege the killings were part of an orchestrated plot tied to Banfield’s relationship with Magalhães. Banfield has pleaded not guilty and faces life in prison if convicted.

Selfies and Captions Shown to Jurors

Among the images discussed in court was a December 2022 photo of Magalhães with Banfield taken in a bathtub. Another image shown to jurors, dated New Year’s Eve 2022, showed Banfield’s hand on Magalhães’ thigh alongside a caption she wrote.

How Prosecutors Link the Images to the Alleged Crime

Prosecutors have alleged Magalhães lived in the Banfield home as the family’s au pair and that the relationship with Banfield developed during that period. They argue the selfies and captions help establish the relationship’s timeline and context leading up to the deaths at the center of the case.

Investigators allege Ryan was lured to the home through communications connected to an online sexual-fetish scenario, and that the resulting events were staged to mislead authorities about what happened inside the residence.

Plea Deal and Trial Status

Magalhães was arrested in October 2023 and later pleaded guilty to manslaughter in connection with the case. She is expected to be sentenced after Banfield’s trial concludes.

Banfield was arrested in September 2024 and remains the primary defendant facing trial. Proceedings were expected to continue for several weeks.
