2002Zhang Pilin was a man whose early life remains largely unknown. He lived in China. Zhang Pilin's actions would later draw a lot of attention. Before a tragic event in May 2002, he had flown to and from different cities in China. Reports indicate that he spent some time at the Beijing airport before his final flight. During this time, he was seen smoking cigarettes in the waiting area.
Some rumors stated that he was suffering from terminal cancer or had accumulated significant debt, but these claims have not been officially confirmed. Zhang Pilin's life ended with the crash of China Northern Airlines Flight 6136 in Dalian, which occurred shortly after he boarded the plane.
On May 7, 2002, China Northern Airlines Flight 6136 took off from Beijing Capital International Airport. The plane was bound for Dalian Zhoushuizi International Airport. Shortly before it was scheduled to land, the captain reported a fire in the cabin. This report was made at 2120 local time, just minutes before the plane lost contact with air traffic control.
As the aircraft approached Dalian, it crashed into the sea. Eyewitnesses from a nearby fishing boat saw flames and smoke coming from the plane before it broke apart in the water. All 111 people on board, including 102 passengers and 9 crew members, were killed.
An investigation later revealed that a passenger named Zhang Pilin had set fire to the passenger cabin using gasoline. The wreckage showed traces of gasoline near Zhang's seat. Most victims died from carbon monoxide inhalation. The critical parts of the plane showed no signs of an explosion.
In the days after the crash, reports surfaced that Zhang had purchased several air insurance policies before the flight. He had bought a total of seven policies, amounting to about 1,400,000 RMB. Prior to this incident, he had flown from Dalian to Beijing and back to Dalian on the same day.
Additionally, authorities found water bottles filled with gasoline in Zhang's apartment. The cockpit and flight data recorders were recovered a week after the crash. However, due to the sensitive nature of the incident, detailed reports about the crash were not made publicly available.
Reports about Zhang being a terminally ill cancer patient or in significant debt circulated, but these claims were never officially confirmed. Zhang himself died in the crash along with everyone else on board.
