murder story

On the night of April 21, 2024, Officer Luis Huesca was found murdered in Gage Park, reportedly during or following a vehicular hijacking. Police later recovered his service weapon, which had allegedly been discarded by a relative of the suspect, Caschaus Tate, who was arrested separately. The firearm was reportedly thrown over a fence at a home on 108th Street and Hale Avenue in Beverly, Chicago.

In the days after the homicide, a warrant was issued for Xavier Tate Jr., but he remained at large. The manhunt concluded on May 1, when U.S. Marshals and CPD tactical teams converged on a second-floor unit in the Glendale Heights complex.

Xavier Tate Jr., 22, was arrested in Glendale Heights, Illinois, on May 1, 2024, in connection with the murder of Chicago Police Officer Luis Huesca. The officer, aged 30, was killed on April 21, 2024, in the Gage Park neighborhood of Chicago.

Authorities launched a 10-day statewide manhunt for Tate, during which time he reportedly hid at an apartment complex in Glendale Heights, about 25 miles west of the crime scene. Though considered a fugitive, he appeared to freely move within the complex, according to neighbors who did not recognize him as the wanted suspect.

As of May 2, 2024, Tate remains in custody and is scheduled for his first court appearance on Friday. Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx and Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling are expected to speak at a press conference following the hearing.

Legal experts have noted that anyone found to have knowingly harbored Tate could face criminal charges for aiding a fugitive.
