— Willie Tyrone Trottie
Willie Tyrone Trottie was born on September 8, 1969, in Harris County, Texas. He grew up in a neighborhood where he faced various challenges. Information about his early childhood is limited, but he was known to have a troubled upbringing. One significant aspect of his early life was his relationship with his mother, who struggled with alcoholism.
As a teenager, Trottie attended school and experienced some disciplinary issues. He was expelled from school in March 1987, and later involved in stealing band equipment, leading to a guilty plea and probation. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he encountered several legal problems, including arrests for carrying weapons and theft.
Trottie began a romantic relationship with Barbara Nell Canada around 1989. The couple moved in together and had a child. However, their relationship became increasingly strained over time. They separated in September 1992, and Barbara moved in with her family. After their breakup, Trottie's behavior became more aggressive. He threatened Barbara multiple times and attempted to control her actions.
In March 1993, Barbara sought a protective order against him due to his threats and harassment. Despite this legal protection, Trottie continued to attempt contact with her, expressing his desire for her to return to their relationship. His emotional turmoil and violent tendencies marked a troubling phase in his life during this time.
On May 3, 1993, Willie Tyrone Trottie went to the home of his former girlfriend, Barbara Canada, in Harris County, Texas. He arrived around 11 p.m., armed with a 9mm pistol. Earlier that day, he had already been to her house with a shotgun but left after a confrontation with Barbara's brother, Titus Canada.
When Trottie arrived that night, he immediately began shooting. He shot Barbara's mother, sister, and brother. Titus grabbed his own gun and shot Trottie several times. Despite being wounded, Trottie found Barbara in a bedroom and shot her eleven times while telling her, "Bitch, I told you I was going to kill you."
After shooting Barbara, Trottie returned to the living room where Titus was lying on the ground. He shot Titus in the back of the head, killing him. After the shooting, Trottie drove himself to the hospital in Barbara's car, where he was arrested.
Trottie was later charged with capital murder for these actions. He went to trial, where he pleaded not guilty but was found guilty. On December 15, 1993, he was sentenced to death. He remained on death row until his execution by lethal injection on September 10, 2014. Before his execution, he expressed regret and asked for forgiveness from the victims' families.
