— Willie Marcel Shannon
Willie Marcel Shannon was born on June 12, 1973, in Houston, Texas. His early life was marked by challenges common in urban areas, and he faced difficulties during his childhood. Details about his family life are limited, but it is known that his father was not present in his life. This absence may have impacted his upbringing.
Growing up, Shannon had a turbulent path. He struggled academically and dropped out of high school after completing ten years of education. Despite dropping out, he obtained his GED, which shows some level of determination to improve his situation. During his youth, Shannon encountered the law frequently. He had a juvenile record and was adjudicated delinquent for various offenses, including burglary. By the age of 19, he had begun to accumulate more serious charges, including aggravated assault.
On July 19, 1992, in Harris County, Texas, Willie Marcel Shannon committed a violent crime that would lead to his death sentence years later. Benjamin Garza, a 38-year-old man, was in his family's station wagon, waiting for his wife and children as they shopped nearby. While he rested, Shannon entered the vehicle from the passenger side and demanded Garza get out. When Garza resisted, a struggle broke out.
During the struggle, Shannon shot Garza in the head and kicked him out of the car. After firing two additional shots at Garza, he fled the scene in the stolen vehicle. As he drove away, he ran over Garza's hand. Shortly after the shooting, Shannon crashed the car in Chambers County, about 50 miles from the crime scene.
After abandoning the vehicle, Shannon was arrested five hours later at a truck stop in Beaumont, Texas. At the time of his arrest, he had a gun in his possession. In addition to the murder of Garza, Shannon was also implicated in the rape of a hotel maid that occurred shortly before the carjacking and murder.
Later, Shannon was charged with capital murder and was found guilty in November 1993. The jury sentenced him to death. After years of appeals, his conviction was upheld, and he was executed by lethal injection on November 8, 2006. In his final words, Shannon expressed that the death of Benjamin Garza was an accident, stating, "I took a father, it wasn't my fault."
