Bio

Willie James Hall, also known as “Bo,” was born in 1956. By the late 1980s, he was living in Georgia and was married to Thelma Hall. Court records describe the marriage between Willie and Thelma Hall as troubled and unstable. The relationship had deteriorated by July 1988. On July 5, 1988, Thelma left the family home and moved in with a friend, Valeria Hudson.

After Thelma moved out, Hall was seen near Hudson’s apartment several times. Witnesses later described him as lurking around the area during the weekend before the murder. On July 10, 1988, one day before the killing, Hall told Thelma’s sister that he was looking for Thelma. He also stated that he was going to kill her and predicted that he would not receive more than ten years in prison.

Murder Story

On the morning of July 11, 1988, Thelma Hall called 911 from Valeria Hudson’s apartment. She reported that someone was trying to break into the home. The dispatcher asked for her address and asked whether she knew who was outside.

Moments later, the dispatcher heard the sound of breaking glass. The call then recorded Thelma’s final words as she recognized her attacker and repeatedly begged him to stop. During the attack, she called him “Bo” several times and pleaded with him while telling him that police were on the way.

Police arrived within minutes. They found Thelma Hall dead inside the residence. She had been stabbed 17 times. Some of the stab wounds formed a pattern around her neck that investigators described as resembling a necklace. Physical evidence linked Willie Hall to the crime scene. Investigators found shoe prints matching his shoes, along with several fingerprints belonging to him.

Hall was indicted in DeKalb County on September 12, 1988, for murder, two counts of felony murder, and burglary. His trial took place in early 1989. On February 2, 1989, a jury found him guilty on all counts. On February 3, 1989, he was sentenced to death for the murder and received a concurrent 20-year sentence for burglary.

The Georgia Supreme Court affirmed Hall’s conviction and death sentence on September 11, 1989. He then pursued state and federal habeas corpus appeals. A federal district court initially granted partial relief as to his sentence in 2001, but the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals reversed that ruling in 2002 and reinstated the death sentence. The United States Supreme Court denied review in 2003.

Hall was scheduled to be executed on January 27, 2004. One day before the scheduled execution, the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles granted clemency and commuted his sentence to life imprisonment without parole. During the clemency proceedings, several jurors from his trial reportedly stated that they would have chosen life without parole if that option had been available at the time of sentencing.

Willie James Hall remains imprisoned under a life-without-parole sentence for the murder of Thelma Hall.
