July 19, 1991William Molony Mentzer was born around 1948 or 1949. He was from California and was later described as a man from Canoga Park. Mentzer was connected to private security and bodyguard work. He was a former bodyguard linked to Larry Flynt.
By the early 1980s, Mentzer was connected to people involved in Hollywood, private security, and criminal activity. He later became one of the men charged in the murder of New York theatrical producer Roy Alexander Radin, a case known as the “Cotton Club” murder case.
Mentzer was also connected to the murder of June Cassandra Mincher. He later pleaded guilty in that case and admitted his role in the shooting. Some reports later tried to connect Mentzer to the Zodiac Killer, Son of Sam, and other unsolved crimes. These claims were not proven in court, so they should only be treated as unverified allegations.
Roy Alexander Radin disappeared on May 13, 1983. He was a New York theatrical producer involved in business talks connected to the film The Cotton Club. Prosecutors later said Radin was kidnapped and killed because of a dispute over money and control of the movie project.
Radin’s body was found in a remote canyon north of Los Angeles. He had been shot multiple times. Prosecutors said William Mentzer and Alex Marti were hired to take part in the kidnapping and murder.
The case became known as the “Cotton Club” murder case because Radin had been trying to help finance the film. Prosecutors said Karen DeLayne Greenberger arranged the killing after a dispute involving the movie deal, cocaine, and money.
Charges were filed years later. On July 19, 1991, Mentzer and Marti were found guilty of first-degree murder in Radin’s death. The jury also found that the murder was committed for financial gain and during a kidnapping. Prosecutors sought the death penalty, but the jury chose life in prison without parole.
Mentzer was also charged in the murder of June Cassandra Mincher. She was shot on May 3, 1984, on a sidewalk in Van Nuys, California. Prosecutors said she was killed because she had been harassing a wealthy Beverly Hills man and his family.
In December 1991, Mentzer pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and murder for hire in Mincher’s case. He also pleaded guilty to attempted murder for wounding another person who was with her. He received another life sentence without parole.
After his convictions, Mentzer’s name appeared in reports about other crimes and conspiracy theories, including claims about the Zodiac Killer and Son of Sam. These claims were never proven in court. San Francisco police later dismissed the Zodiac claim, saying the evidence did not support a real connection.
Mentzer’s verified criminal record is based on two confirmed murder cases: Roy Radin in 1983 and June Cassandra Mincher in 1984. He was convicted or pleaded guilty in both cases and was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
