murder story

Wayne Eugene DuMond was charged with murder in 1972 after he and two accomplices killed a man in Lawton, Oklahoma. They used the daughter of one accomplice to lure the victim to a remote place. Although DuMond admitted to attacking the victim, he was not charged in exchange for his testimony against the other two men.

In 1973, DuMond faced charges for molesting a teenage girl in Tacoma, Washington, resulting in a deferred sentence and mandatory counseling. He was again charged with rape in DeWitt, Arkansas, in 1976, but the charges were dropped after he agreed to undergo counseling.

DuMond's next serious charge came in 1984 when he raped Ashley Stevens, a 17-year-old cheerleader who was a cousin of then-Governor Bill Clinton. While awaiting trial for this rape, he claimed he had been attacked and castrated in his home. The police report noted that the circumstances raised questions about the validity of his claim.

In 1985, DuMond was convicted of the rape and was sentenced to life imprisonment plus 20 years. His case drew significant attention in the years that followed, particularly during the 2008 presidential campaign of Mike Huckabee, who was criticized for his involvement in DuMond's early release.

After spending about 15 years in prison, DuMond was paroled in 1999 and moved to Smithville, Missouri. However, in 2001, he was arrested for the rape and murder of Carol Sue Shields in Parkville, Missouri. He was convicted in 2003 for these crimes.

DuMond died in prison on September 1, 2005, after suffering from cancer. At the time of his death, he was facing charges related to another case involving the rape and murder of a pregnant woman, which had not yet been filed.
