murder story

On January 18, 2002, 15-year-old Esmeralda Alvarado went missing after leaving her boyfriend's house in the East End of Houston. Her body was found on January 22, 2002, in a field in an industrial area on Market Street. She had been kidnapped, raped, and shot in the head.

Later that year, on May 31, 2002, two waitresses named Roxana Aracelie Capulin and Maria Moreno Rangel also went missing. Their bodies were discovered on July 1, 2002, in Capulin's vehicle. Both women had been shot to death, and their eyes and mouths were covered with tape.

Walter Alexander Sorto was arrested after he tried to claim a reward for helping to solve the crimes. He confessed to the murders. Sorto, along with another adult perpetrator, Edgardo Rafael Cubas, and a teenage boy named Eduardo Navarro, faced serious charges. Sorto was sentenced to death for his role in the murders of Capulin and Rangel in November 2003.

Cubas was convicted of the capital murder of Alvarado and received a death sentence on May 22, 2004, after a short jury deliberation. Both Sorto and Cubas were housed in the death row section of the Polunsky Unit in Texas.
