— Vincent Tabak
Vincent Tabak was born on February 10, 1978, in Veghel, Netherlands. He was the youngest of five children in his family, with parents named Gerald and Sonja Tabak. Vincent grew up in a well-off household and was described by his childhood neighbors as intelligent but introverted.
Vincent attended school in the Netherlands and developed an interest in architecture. He later studied at the Eindhoven University of Technology, graduating with a Master of Science in architecture, building, and planning in 2003. His academic work included a PhD thesis on how people use space in offices and public areas. The thesis was published in 2008.
After completing his education, Vincent moved to the United Kingdom in 2007 to work for an engineering consultancy firm called Buro Happold, based in Bath, England. He took a role as a "people flow analyst," focusing on how crowds move in public spaces like airports and schools.
In 2009, he moved into a flat in Canynge Road, Clifton, Bristol, with his girlfriend, Tanja Morson, whom he met through an online dating site. Vincent was known for his work ethic and dedication, but there were reports that he became increasingly reclusive and distant in his personal life.
While living in Bristol, Vincent's interests included sailing and traveling. He seemed to lead a fairly ordinary life, although he had become involved in some unusual internet searches related to adult content. Despite being in a relationship, it was later revealed that he had contacted various escort services in the months leading up to significant events in his life.
Tabak had not met his neighbor, Joanna Yeates, prior to 17 December 2010, the day his life would change drastically. On that date, significant events unfolded that led to his eventual arrest and trial, but prior to that, Vincent Tabak had a seemingly normal upbringing and professional life.
On December 17, 2010, Joanna Yeates ended her workday and left a pub after having drinks with colleagues. She walked home to her flat in Clifton, Bristol. During her walk, she stopped at a local supermarket and bought a pizza and two bottles of cider. CCTV footage later confirmed her presence at various locations, including the supermarket and near her flat.
That night, Vincent Tabak, her neighbor, confronted her in her flat. Reports indicate that he strangled her using enough force to kill her quickly. Following the murder, Tabak put Joanna's body in his car and drove to a remote area in Failand, about three miles away from where she lived. He attempted to hide her body by covering it with leaves before he left the scene.
Joanna's body was discovered on Christmas Day, December 25, 2010, by a couple walking their dogs in the area. The police launched an extensive investigation, which led them to arrest Tabak on January 20, 2011, based on an anonymous tip. After being questioned, he was charged with her murder two days later.
During his trial, witnesses testified that Joanna had numerous injuries, indicating a struggle before she died. Prosecutors argued that the murder had sexual motivations based on Tabak's behavior and interests in violent pornography that investigators uncovered.
On October 28, 2011, after a lengthy trial, Tabak was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum period of 20 years before he could be considered for parole.
