Valmae Faye Beck was born on August 2, 1943. She grew up in a family with three older brothers. As a child, she faced many challenges. When she was twelve years old, she began working in a clothing factory. By the time she turned fifteen, her home life had become difficult due to parental neglect. This situation led to her becoming a ward of the state.
From 1961 to 1972, Valmae had numerous run-ins with the law. She spent much of this time in and out of jail. While in prison in Perth, she met Catherine Birnie, who was also a serial killer. This meeting had a strong influence on Valmae's life. Before marrying Barrie Watts, she had been married twice before and had six children.
Her time in prison was not easy. Fellow inmates often targeted her, and she faced physical assaults. At one point, she was seriously injured when someone struck her in the head with a tin can placed inside a sock. Due to the violence, she was transferred to the Townsville Correctional Centre. During her time in jail, she reportedly converted to Christianity.
Valmae divorced Barrie Watts in 1990 and expressed regret over her relationship with him. In 1993, she began dating Robert John Fardon, a convicted rapist. Over the years, Valmae Beck applied for parole three times but was unsuccessful. In 2007, she changed her name to Fay Cramb.
In May 2008, she underwent heart surgery and was placed in an induced coma at Townsville Hospital. She passed away on May 27, 2008, without regaining consciousness.
murder story
On November 27, 1987, Sian Kingi, a twelve-year-old schoolgirl, disappeared while riding her bicycle home from school. She was last seen near Pinnaroo Park in Noosa Heads, Australia. Concern grew when she did not return home, prompting her family to call friends and check the area. By the evening, Sian's parents contacted the police to report her missing.
The search for Sian led to the discovery of her body on December 3, 1987, in a dry creek bed in the Tinbeerwah Mountain State Forest, fifteen kilometers from where she was last seen. Police began investigating a white 1973 Holden Kingswood station wagon linked to the case, as witnesses reported seeing it in the area around the time of the abduction. This vehicle belonged to Valmae Beck and her husband, Barrie Watts.
Both Beck and Watts had criminal records and were arrested on December 12, 1987, after police tracked them down in New South Wales. They were extradited back to Queensland, where they faced serious charges. On December 15, they were charged with the abduction, rape, and murder of Sian Kingi.
During the investigation, Beck talked to police while Watts remained silent. Beck revealed details of the crime, explaining how they had planned the abduction. She described how she lured Sian into a trap by pretending to look for a lost dog. After taking her to a secluded area, Sian was assaulted before being killed.
Both Beck and Watts were tried separately. Beck pleaded guilty to the abduction and rape but not guilty to murder. She was found guilty on October 20, 1988, and sentenced to life imprisonment among other charges. Watts was also found guilty and given a similar sentence two years later.
After the trial, Watts faced other charges in connection to a different murder. Beck, who had divorced Watts, spent her time in prison, where she faced struggles and health issues. She passed away in May 2008 while still in custody.
