— Thomas Selmayr
Thomas Selmayr was born in 1960. He grew up in Germany but little is known about his early childhood. Throughout his life, Thomas faced various challenges, especially in later years when he struggled with financial problems.
Thomas was married to the sister of a woman named Anette Schulz. They had four children together. In 2010, Thomas and his family moved into an unfinished house in Peißenberg. Unfortunately, they had difficulties paying their loans, which caused them a lot of stress. Thomas tried to persuade Anette to sell a flat that they co-owned, hoping to use the money to pay off their debts. However, Anette refused his requests.
In addition to his financial issues, Thomas struggled with finding stable employment. Before his arrest, he had recently taken a job doing night shifts at a post office. Prior to that, he had owned a carpet business, which eventually failed, leading to his current circumstances.
On March 24, 2011, Thomas Selmayr committed two murders in Krailling, Bavaria, Germany. The victims were his nieces, Sharon, aged 11, and Chiara, aged 8. Their mother, Anette, had left the girls alone at home while she worked a night shift. The door was unlocked to ensure the girls could escape in case of a fire.
Late that night, Thomas entered the home while the girls were asleep. He first attacked Chiara, strangling her with a rope before she became unconscious. When Sharon woke and went to check on her sister, he turned his attention to her. He struck Sharon multiple times with a barbell and then stabbed her with a knife. The autopsy later revealed that both girls had sustained numerous injuries.
After killing Sharon, Chiara regained consciousness and attempted to block the door to protect herself. However, Thomas overpowered her as well, inflicting fatal injuries with the barbell and knife. By 5:00 a.m., Anette returned home to discover the horrific scene.
The investigation began shortly after the bodies were found. Police collected DNA evidence from the crime scene, which included traces of blood left by Thomas. Although he initially denied any involvement, he was arrested nine days later due to forensic evidence linking him to the murders.
During the trial, prosecutors argued that Thomas had planned the murders in order to secure financial benefits for his family. On April 16, 2012, he was convicted of the double murder and sentenced to life imprisonment.
