Bio

Thomas Mitchell Overton was born on November 5, 1955. He worked at a gas station in Florida. This job was significant as it placed him in close contact with local residents. It was during this time that he became familiar with some of the people living in the area, including future victims.

Murder Story

On August 22, 1991, police discovered the bodies of Susan and Michael MacIvor in their home in Tavernier Key, Monroe County, Florida. Susan was eight months pregnant at the time. Neighbors and coworkers had alerted authorities when they noticed that neither the couple nor their unborn child was seen for some time.

When officers searched the house, they found Mr. MacIvor's body in the living room. There were signs of a struggle. His head was covered in masking tape, leaving only part of his nose exposed. He had a blood spot on his shirt, and there were bruises around his neck.

In the master bedroom, officers found Ms. MacIvor's body on the bed. She was naked, with her ankles bound by a belt and other household items. There was a device made from a necktie and a sash around her neck. Evidence showed signs of physical restraint, and further inspection revealed that her clothes had been forcibly removed.

An autopsy revealed that Mr. MacIvor died due to asphyxiation from ligature strangulation and had sustained severe blows to the head. His body also showed bruising on the neck and internal injuries indicating he was conscious for a brief period before dying.

Ms. MacIvor also had ligature marks on her body and signs of trauma, consistent with strangulation. The medical examiner stated that her unborn child likely lived for about 30 minutes after her death.

Investigators initially considered Thomas Overton a suspect. He was known to have committed burglaries in the area and worked at a gas station nearby. In 1996, Overton was arrested for burglary. While in custody, he attempted suicide, which led to him inadvertently providing a blood sample.

Tests showed a DNA match between Overton's blood and the semen found on the bedding at the crime scene. Witnesses testified that Overton had made incriminating statements, including detailing events similar to those of the MacIvor murders.

Overton was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, as well as charges for killing an unborn child and sexual battery. He was found guilty on all counts. In March 1999, he was sentenced to death for his crimes. Overton continues to appeal his conviction while remaining on death row.
