February 25, 1982Thomas Dewey Pope was born on January 29, 1949. He grew up in Florida. He had connections with various people in the drug scene. He lived in Broward County, Florida, where he would later commit his crimes.
On January 16, 1981, Thomas Dewey Pope was involved in the deaths of two men, Al Doranz and Caesar Di Russo. They were killed in an apartment. Pope and his girlfriend, Susan Eckard, were with them earlier that evening. After a while, Pope and Eckard left to visit someone. During this time, Pope arranged a drug deal with Doranz and Di Russo. Eckard later testified that when Pope returned to the apartment, he claimed something had happened and suggested that Kristine Walters, Doranz's girlfriend, should stay at his place for safety.
Walters checked into a hotel the next day. During her stay, Pope supplied her with drugs. He then expressed to Eckard that he felt compelled to kill her. On January 18, Pope drove Walters to a canal and shot her multiple times. After shooting her, he hit her with the gun and then dragged her to the canal, where she drowned.
The bodies of Doranz and Di Russo were discovered on January 19, 1981, in Walters' apartment. They had been shot several times. Walter's body was found floating in the canal a few days later. This series of events led to Thomas Dewey Pope being charged with three counts of first-degree murder. He was convicted and sentenced to death on April 7, 1982.
