— Thayne M. Ormsby
Thayne M. Ormsby was born in 1990. He grew up in Ellsworth, Maine. Thayne’s family life was difficult, and by the age of 12, he had been removed from his mother's custody due to physical abuse. After being taken away, he lived with his uncle for some time until he was 17.
Thayne attended Ellsworth High School but dropped out during his senior year. Afterward, he moved to Orient, Maine, just a mile from where the murders would later take place. While living in Orient, he stayed with a couple named Robert and Joy Strout. They took him in for reasons not entirely clear but linked to family relationships. Robert Strout is related to Tamara Strout, who had a daughter with Jeffrey Ryan, a later victim in the case.
On June 22, 2010, Thayne M. Ormsby committed a triple murder in Amity, Maine. His victims were 55-year-old Jeffrey Ryan, his 10-year-old son Jesse, and their family friend Jason Dehahn, who was 30 years old. Ormsby used a combat-style knife to stab them multiple times. The bodies were discovered about 27 hours after the crime.
Ormsby was arrested on July 2, 2010, after he confessed to the murders during an interview with the police in Dover, New Hampshire. He claimed he believed Jeffrey Ryan was a drug dealer, which was not supported by any evidence. After killing Jeffrey, Ormsby went back inside the home and also attacked Jesse and Jason.
He was charged with three counts of murder and one count of arson for burning Jeffrey Ryan’s truck. In 2012, a jury found him guilty of all charges. On June 7, he was sentenced to three life terms in prison without the possibility of parole. Ormsby appealed, but his convictions and sentences were affirmed by the court.
