2004Taichin Preyor was born on September 2, 1970, in Texas. He did not complete high school, finishing with only ten years of education. Taichin worked as a truck driver and laborer. He had a history of drug use that started when he was a teenager. In 1999, he was arrested in Syracuse, New York, for possession of crack cocaine. He pleaded guilty and served a one-year sentence. After his release, he moved to San Antonio, Texas, where he lived with his wife and children.
Taichin's behavior often reflected his struggles with anger and aggression. In January 2004, just a month before his arrest for murder, police were called to his apartment due to a family violence incident. Although there was no serious injury reported, it highlighted his ongoing issues.
During his time in jail while waiting for trial after his arrest, Taichin experienced disciplinary problems. His jail records showed that he disobeyed orders and engaged in loud behavior. He also had tattoos that marked significant events in his life, including his drug conviction and the murder charges he faced.
On February 26, 2004, Taichin Preyor entered an apartment in Bexar County, Texas. He had gone there to see Jami Tackett. At that time, Jami was 24 years old and had some friends over, including her boyfriend, Jason Garza. After the last guest left around 4:00 AM, Jami and Jason locked the door and went to bed.
Shortly after they fell asleep, Preyor broke down the front door dressed in black. He entered Jami's bedroom and attacked Jason first. In the struggle, he stabbed Jason, but Jason managed to escape and sought help from neighbors. This left Jami alone with Preyor.
Preyor then turned his attention to Jami, stabbing her multiple times and slashing her throat. The injuries were severe. Jami struggled for breath on the floor as Preyor attempted to leave. He briefly exited the apartment but returned, presumably looking for his car keys.
While Preyor was searching for his keys, police arrived at the scene. They found him as he tried to leave the apartment complex. Preyor did not comply with their orders, and the police struggled to arrest him. He was covered in blood at the time. Later, officers discovered a loaded shotgun on the bumper of his car, along with a knife and gloves nearby.
Jami Tackett did not survive the attack. The incident led to Preyor's arrest on the same day. He was charged with murder for his actions that night. In March 2005, he was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death. His conviction was upheld by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals in January 2008.
