Taberon Dave Honie was born on October 29, 1975, in Keams Canyon, Arizona. He was a member of the Hopi tribe, a Native American community. Honie grew up facing many challenges in his early life. He described having his first experience with alcohol when he was just five years old.
murder story
On the evening of July 9, 1998, Taberon Dave Honie called Carol Pikyavit, threatening violence if she did not come to see him immediately. Carol was not home at the time. Later that night, Honie broke into the home of Carol's mother, Claudia Marie Benn, by shattering a sliding glass door. When Claudia attempted to defend herself with a kitchen knife, Honie overpowered her. He attacked her, inflicting multiple severe injuries.
The next day, police responded to a 911 call from a neighbor. They found Claudia's body in the house, showing signs of violence and numerous stab wounds. Honie was discovered in the garage, where he was arrested. He admitted to the crime, stating, "I stabbed her. I killed her with a knife." The police also found Claudia's three young granddaughters in the house, who were covered in blood.
After his arrest, Honie faced charges including aggravated murder and rape. He chose to have a bench trial instead of a jury trial. On May 20, 1999, Honie was found guilty and sentenced to death by lethal injection. His conviction was upheld through various appeals over the years, but he continued to challenge his sentence based on claims regarding the death penalty and his mental health.
On May 1, 2024, the Utah Attorney General filed a request for Honie's execution. After legal challenges regarding execution methods, a date was set for August 8, 2024. Initially, a new lethal injection cocktail was proposed, but Utah officials later decided to use pentobarbital instead.
Before his execution, Honie requested clemency, discussing his difficult childhood. Just days before his execution, he acknowledged his crime, expressing remorse. Despite attempts to secure a reprieve, the parole board rejected his request.
On the night of August 8, Honie's execution took place at midnight. He had a final meal of a cheeseburger, fries, and a milkshake. After making a statement, he received the lethal injection at 12:04 AM. He was pronounced dead shortly after, at 12:25 AM. This execution marked Utah's first since 2010.
