murder story

On January 13, 2003, in the Wright family's home in Harris County, Texas, a serious crime took place. Susan Wright, 26 years old at the time, tied her husband, Jeff Wright, to their bed. She then stabbed him 193 times using two different knives. Afterward, she buried his body in their backyard. To hide her actions, she painted the bedroom.

The next day, Susan filed a false report claiming that her husband had abused her. She wanted to obtain a restraining order against him. However, on January 18, she confessed to her lawyer, Neal Davis, admitting that she had stabbed Jeff. Davis then informed the Harris County district attorney's office about the buried body.

Susan turned herself in to the authorities on January 24, 2003. She was charged with murder shortly after. Thirteen months later, her trial began on February 24, 2004. During the trial, Susan pleaded not guilty, claiming she acted in self-defense. The prosecution argued that Susan planned the murder to collect on a life insurance policy worth $200,000. In her testimony, Susan described how she felt she had to keep stabbing her husband to protect herself, citing a violent incident the night of the murder.

After several days of deliberation, the jury found Susan guilty of murder on March 3, 2004. The next day, she was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Susan was held at the Crain Unit in Gatesville, Texas.

In 2005, her conviction was upheld in appeals court. Later, in 2008, a new witness came forward, sharing similar experiences of abuse from Jeff Wright. In 2009, Susan was granted a new sentencing hearing due to issues with her legal representation during the original trial. Her sentence was reduced to 20 years in 2010.

Susan was eligible for parole in 2014 but was denied twice. Finally, on July 2, 2020, she was approved for parole. She was released on December 30, 2020, at the age of 44.
