murder story

In 2018, Stewart Weldon was arrested on May 27 after police pulled him over for a broken taillight. During the stop, officers discovered a woman tied up in the backseat of his car. The woman was alive and shouted that Weldon had kidnapped her. He was quickly taken into custody. The woman told the police that Weldon had held her captive for over a month. She reported being violently assaulted during this time.

After his arrest, Weldon's mother contacted the police because she noticed a foul smell coming from their home. On May 31, authorities searched Weldon's property and found the decomposing bodies of three women. They were later identified as America Lyden, Ernestine Ryans, and Kayla Escalante. Lyden was reported missing in December 2017, while Ryans was missing since March 2018. Escalante's family had last heard from her in December but had not reported her missing.

Weldon's arrest marked the end of a series of rapes in the Springfield area, occurring from June 2017 until his capture. By the time of his arrest, authorities believed he was responsible for multiple assaults on local women.

Weldon faced numerous charges, totaling 52 counts, which included three counts of first-degree murder. Initially, he pleaded not guilty. His bail was set at $2 million. After a series of delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he underwent mental health evaluations to determine if he was fit to stand trial. In September 2021, he changed his plea to guilty for the charges against him.

On September 30, 2021, Weldon was sentenced to three consecutive life terms in prison without the possibility of parole.
