— Steven Ceon Renfro
Steven Ceon Renfro was born on September 14, 1957. He grew up in Marshall, Texas. Renfro became known to local authorities as a teenager. He was involved in several incidents which included fights and other trouble with the law. His quick temper often got him into conflicts, especially when he had been drinking. Friends and classmates noted that he had a history of violence, particularly under the influence of alcohol.
During his youth, Renfro attended the Harrison County high school. He had a few close friendships, but his relationships were often affected by his behavior. Reports described a pattern of aggressive behavior. His actions caused tension in his personal and school life.
As he transitioned into adulthood, Renfro continued to face legal issues. He had multiple arrests related to drunk driving and other offenses. The impact of his early environment and choices played a role in his later life. Steven Renfro's story took a tragic turn that led to serious consequences in 1996.
On August 25, 1996, Steven Ceon Renfro was involved in a violent incident that resulted in three deaths and one police officer being injured. After taking a large amount of the tranquilizer Valium and drinking alcohol, Renfro dressed in camouflage clothing, blackened his face, and armed himself with multiple guns, including a military-style assault rifle. He had around 500 rounds of ammunition with him.
Renfro first shot and killed his live-in girlfriend, Rhena Fulter, who was 36 years old. Next, he killed his aunt, Rose Rutledge, who was 63 years old. After these attacks, Renfro went to the trailer of a 40-year-old acquaintance named George Counts. He shot at the mobile home and fired over 150 rounds into it, killing Counts.
When the police arrived in response to reports of gunfire, Renfro opened fire again, hitting a police officer, Dominic Pondant, in the shoulder. This exchange of gunfire continued, with Renfro using his high-powered weapons. During the incident, one of his weapons malfunctioned, allowing police to return fire and eventually subdue him.
After the shooting spree, Renfro was arrested the same day. He later confessed to the police, saying, "I killed them all. I killed my whole family." He was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death in April 1997. Renfro chose not to appeal his sentence and requested that his execution take place as soon as possible.
On February 9, 1998, Steven Renfro was executed by lethal injection in Texas. He expressed remorse in his final statement, apologizing to the victims’ families and asking for forgiveness. He then prayed aloud as the execution process began. Renfro was pronounced dead shortly after the administration of the lethal drugs.
